Furniture-making: Frequently Asked Questions

Some of the things I get asked most often. I hope these FAQs will help you when considering commissioning bespoke furniture. But if you want to know something that’s not covered here, just get in touch!

  • My process is simple, it starts with a cup of tea and a blank piece of paper.

Then we create something wonderful together.

More information about my design and build process is on my services page.

But the best place to start is by giving me a call to chat about what you want.

  • What can you dream up? I can make anything from a fully fitted and highly functional modern kitchen to a highly individual piece of artisan furniture to suit any room and any taste. I also make commercial furniture such as shop fittings and reception desks.

  • It’s important to understand that commissioning bespoke hand-built furniture is not something that can be done cheaply. To give you some idea, a fitted alcove unit can start from £3,000.

  • Really anything is possible from American white oak finished with wax to a super-smooth painted finish. I create furniture from solid woods and veneered MDF such as oak, ash, maple, walnut, beech and birch plywood.

  • I’m based in Cornwall so usually work within the county but I can travel in the south west for larger commissions.

  • Yes, absolutely. You can see some examples of my commercial work to give you an idea of the kinds of things I have done in the past, but all commissions are bespoke so let your imagination run wild!

  • Yes it definitely is. I specialise in making highly bespoke furniture to fit even the wonkiest walls or the most unusual spaces.

  • Not at all. I take very detailed measurements and do all the construction work at my workshop in St Austell. I will install your new furniture with the minimum disruption to your home and guarantee no mess left behind! I use floor coverings and carpet protection and dust extraction for any final cuts that need to be made.

My past customers often mention this in their reviews.

  • Honestly I can make anything you can think of. My designs incorporate painted finishes, glass, metal and lighting. I use modern fixtures and fittings, for example touch-latch drawers with concealed soft-close runners.

So the final result is a perfect combination of high-end bespoke craftsmanship and modern function. Check out my gallery for some inspiration.

  • The process of designing and building custom furniture is variable depending on the complexity of the item and where it will be sited.

But I usually have a 2-3 month waiting list so if you’re thinking about it, don’t hang about and get in touch.
